Proceeding to checkout trigger
The Proceeding to checkout trigger shows a widget when the visitor starts checkout. On Shopify, checkout waits while the widget is open and continues when it closes, so you can offer a last-minute upsell, a discount or free-shipping reminder without losing the order.

How it works
Shopify
- The visitor clicks a checkout button or link.
- Personizely puts checkout on hold, checks the trigger's conditions and the trigger-time rules, and shows the widget if they pass.
- When the widget closes, by any means (close button, a Close widget action, Esc or a close trigger), checkout continues. If the visitor added something from the widget, checkout waits until the cart has been updated.
- If no widget shows, checkout continues straight away.
These count as starting checkout:
- the checkout button on the cart page;
- links to /checkout, including market and language versions such as /fr/checkout;
- cart permalinks such as /cart/123456789:1;
- the checkout button of common cart drawers.
Shopify Hydrogen
Your checkout button calls the function returned by the useCheckout() hook from @personizely/shopify-hydrogen. It resolves to true when a widget was shown. When it's false, send the visitor to checkout; when it's true, your code decides when to continue. See Install on Shopify Hydrogen.
Wix
The trigger fires when Wix reports that checkout has started. Navigation can't be held on Wix: the visitor continues toward checkout while the widget appears. Use it for messages that still make sense on the way to or during checkout, rather than offers that need a decision first.

The trigger has no other settings. Use a Target rule to limit it by cart value or cart contents.
Behavior details and limitations
- Only the first checkout attempt on a page counts (Shopify). After the visitor's first click toward checkout, the trigger stops listening on that page, whether or not the widget showed.
- Express checkout buttons don't fire it. Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and dynamic "Buy it now" buttons go straight to Shopify's checkout without passing through the cart page.
- The widget's own buttons still apply. A button with Open URL in the same tab takes the visitor to that URL instead of checkout. Use Close widget for "No thanks" so checkout continues.
- Several widgets. If more than one widget has this trigger, checkout continues when a widget that was shown closes.
- Cart-based targeting works. Target is evaluated when the visitor clicks checkout, so cart value and cart items are current.
Examples
- Last-minute add-on: Popup with a Products element offering gift wrap, Close widget on "No thanks". Checkout continues after either choice.
- Free-shipping reminder: Target "cart value less than $75" plus a message showing how much is left for free shipping.
- Discount rescue: Coupon element with Auto apply on, so the code is on the cart when checkout continues.
Troubleshooting
- Checkout doesn't continue after closing → the widget's button uses Open URL or Go to step instead of Close widget.
- Widget doesn't show from the cart drawer → the drawer uses a custom checkout button that isn't a link to /checkout. Show the widget from the drawer's code with ply.showWidget.
