Customer filter (Shopify)
The Customer filter matches visitors by their Shopify customer account: whether they're logged in with an account, and which customer tags they have. Use it for VIP or wholesale messaging, loyalty tiers, or to treat logged-in customers differently from guests.
Available on: Shopify Online Store · Shopify Hydrogen (see below).
How it's evaluated
The filter reads: Shopify customer [has an account] or [has tags that are any of / none of / all of [tags]].
Personizely reads the logged-in customer, and their tags, from Shopify when the page loads. A visitor who isn't logged in is a guest.
Option | Logged-in customer matches when | Guest |
|---|---|---|
has an account | Always (they're logged in to their account) | Doesn't match |
has tags: any of | They have at least one of the tags | Doesn't match |
has tags: all of | They have every tag | Doesn't match |
has tags: none of | They have none of the tags | Matches (a guest has no tags) |
Options

Behavior details
- Logged in means logged in now. A returning customer who hasn't signed in on this visit is a guest until they do. To also recognize customers who aren't logged in, use the Order history filter, which uses Personizely's own purchase tracking for guests.
- "none of" includes guests. "has tags none of wholesale" matches every guest and every logged-in customer without that tag. To limit it to logged-in customers, add "has an account" in the same group with match all.
- Tags are exact and case-sensitive. VIP doesn't match vip. Enter tags exactly as they appear in your Shopify admin.
- Tag changes apply on the next page load. If an app or a Shopify Flow adds a tag while the customer is browsing, it's picked up on their next page view.
- Tag customers from Personizely. The Add customer Shopify automation creates a Shopify customer with your tags when a visitor submits a widget form. The Customer filter sees those tags once that customer logs in.
- Shopify Hydrogen. Pass the logged-in customer (including hasAccount and tags) to PersonizelyProvider with the customer prop. Without it, every visitor is treated as a guest. See Install on Shopify Hydrogen.
Examples
- Wholesale pricing banner: "Shopify customer has tags any of wholesale" for a bar that links to the wholesale order form.
- Sign-in prompt for guests: a group set to don't match with "Shopify customer has an account", for a callout that invites guests to log in and see their rewards.
- Loyalty tiers: one personalization variation per tier, each targeted to "has tags any of gold", silver or bronze.
