Install Personizely on Shopify
To install Personizely on a Shopify store, you install the Personizely app from the Shopify App Store and then turn on the Code snippet app embed in your theme. The app connects your store for products, carts and server-side order tracking. The app embed loads the snippet on every storefront page. Both steps are required.
Available on: Shopify Online Store themes. For headless Hydrogen storefronts, see Install Personizely on Shopify Hydrogen.
Install the app
- In the Shopify App Store, search for Personizely and click Install.
- Review the permissions and approve them. Shopify sends you to Personizely, where your account and website are created and your store is connected. If you already have a Personizely account, the store is connected to it.
- You land on the Personizely dashboard with the next step: enabling the app embed.
Turn on the app embed
The app embed is what puts the snippet on your storefront. Shopify doesn't let apps turn it on for you.
- In Personizely, click Install now. This opens the theme editor of your live theme with the App embeds panel open.
- Switch on Code snippet (listed under Personizely).
- Click Save in the theme editor.
- Back in Personizely, click Check to confirm the snippet is detected.
The app embed is enabled per theme, as with all Shopify theme app extensions. Turn Code snippet on in each theme where Personizely should run, including the themes you use in Theme testing (Shopify). In a theme where it's off, Personizely doesn't run.
Manual integration (fallback)
If you can't use app embeds, click Manual integration in Personizely to get a plain script tag, and paste it just before </head> in layout/theme.liquid. Use this only as a fallback. The app embed also passes store data to the snippet: the current template, market, currency and money format, the product on product pages, the logged-in customer and their tags and paid orders, and the cart. Template testing (Shopify) and several targeting filters, such as customer, order history and market, need that data. Don't use both methods at once.
What the app adds to your store
What | Why | Visible in Shopify admin |
|---|---|---|
Code snippet app embed | Loads the snippet in the <head> of every storefront page, with store data | Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds |
Web pixel | Reports add to cart and checkout started events, and checkout events from GoKwik, ShipRocket and Shopflo. Runs according to the visitor's privacy choices. | Settings → Customer events |
Webhooks | Receive orders (for Shopify order tracking and profit), product changes, theme publishes, store updates and app uninstall | Not listed in admin |
Theme files snippets/personizely.cart.liquid, snippets/personizely.product.liquid, templates/cart.personizely.json.liquid, templates/product.personizely.json.liquid | Let the snippet read cart and product data. They don't change how any page looks. They're added to your live theme, and to any theme you publish later. | Online Store → Themes → Edit code |
App metafields | Store your website key and loading setting for the app embed | Not listed in admin |
Agencies using white label see their own brand name in place of personizely in the file names.
Some features add more when you use them, and ask for extra permissions at that point:
- Price testing (Shopify) activate a Shopify Function (Shopify Plus) or create hidden duplicate products (other plans).
- Shipping rate testing (Shopify) need shipping permissions.
- Track profit analytics needs inventory access to read product costs.
- Tag orders with campaign attribution needs permission to edit orders.
Settings to check after installing
Setting | Where | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
Asynchronous script loading | Settings → Tracking | Loads the snippet without blocking the page. Turn off to prevent flicker in content tests. The app embed picks up the change automatically. | On |
Attribute orders | Settings → Tracking | Records purchases When the order is paid or When the order is created. Choose "created" for cash on delivery. | When the order is paid |
Store password | Settings → Website | Lets Personizely's install check and page screenshots get past your storefront password | Empty |
Attribution window | Settings → Tracking | How long after a view a purchase is credited | 7 days |
Verify it works
- Open your storefront in a normal browser window. If the store is password protected, enter the password first.
- Open the developer console. You should see Personizely initialized. Startup time: <n>ms.
- In Personizely, the Snippet card on the Dashboard shows the snippet as installed and tracking active once your first visit is tracked.
- Add a product to the cart and start checkout. The add to cart and checkout events appear in reports for goals that track them.
- Place a test order (for example with Shopify's Bogus Gateway on a development store) to confirm purchases are recorded. Unpaid orders only count if Attribute orders is set to When the order is created.
If anything's missing, see Verify and troubleshoot your installation.
Behavior details and limitations
- The app can't be disconnected from the integrations list. On Shopify, the store connection is the platform itself. To remove Personizely, uninstall the app in Shopify.
- Checkout is Shopify's. The snippet runs on your storefront, not inside Shopify checkout. Purchases still count because they come from Shopify order data, and checkout events come from the web pixel.
- Password-protected stores. The snippet runs for anyone who has entered the password. The Store password setting is only used by Personizely's own install check and screenshots.
- Consent. Personizely reads the visitor's choice from Shopify's Customer Privacy API on page load. See Cookies and consent.
- Ad-blockers. On Shopify, the snippet keeps working when common ad-blockers are active.
- Sections. The app also provides Embedded widget and Placeholder app blocks, which you can add to any section in the theme editor to place an Embedded widgets and placeholders exactly where you want it.
Troubleshooting
- "Check" says the code isn't found → the app embed is off, or you saved it in a theme that isn't live. Open the live theme's editor, turn on Code snippet and click Save.
- Personizely stopped working after a theme change → the app embed is off in the theme that's now live. Open that theme's editor, turn on Code snippet and click Save.
- Nothing in the console → a cached page or an optimization app may be serving old HTML. Reload without cache, and check that no app removes or delays third-party scripts.
- Purchases missing → see Shopify order tracking and profit. Orders are matched to visitors server-side, and orders placed by visitors who never loaded the storefront snippet can't be attributed.
