Widget goals and conversions
Personizely measures a widget in two ways. A conversion is an action inside the widget, such as a form submit or a button click, that you mark with the Track widget conversion automation. A goal is something the visitor does on your site afterwards, such as a purchase, which is credited to the widget if they saw or converted in it within your attribution window. Conversions tell you whether the widget persuades; goals and revenue tell you whether it pays off.
Available on: all platforms. Coupon and product attribution: Shopify and Wix.
How it works
- The visitor sees the widget. A view is recorded.
- They interact. Clicks, form submits, wheel spins, coupon copies and countdowns reaching zero are recorded as events.
- Automations mark the outcome. If the element's automations include Track widget conversion, the event counts as a conversion. Track widget completion counts it as a completion.
- Later, the visitor reaches a goal, for example a Shopify purchase. Personizely looks back over the Revenue attribution and credits every widget that tracks that goal and qualifies (see Goal attribution).
- Reports show both. The widget report shows conversion rate, completion rate, goal conversion rate and revenue.
Conversions
Add Track widget conversion to the element that represents success, in the element's automations.
- It's added automatically when you add a Button, Form, Survey or Products element. Removing it shows a warning.
- You can also add it to linked Images, Countdown timers (when they reach zero), Cart progress (when the goal is reached) and individual Wheel of fortune segments (for example only prize segments).
- Each time the automation runs, one conversion is counted for the widget and the variation shown.
A conversion also changes how the widget behaves for that visitor: it enables the "converted" options of the Frequency rule rule, stops the widget from minimizing to its teaser, resets the saved step and, without Attribute on view, is what makes the visitor's later goals count for the widget. See Track widget conversion.
Stop once converted needs Track widget conversion. If the button or form that ends your flow doesn't run the automation, no conversion is ever recorded, and a widget set to stop once converted keeps showing to visitors who already signed up.
Completions
Track widget completion records a separate completion, shown as Completion rate in the report. Use it for a second milestone, such as reaching the last step of a quiz, when conversion is already used for the main action. After a completion, further step changes on that page view aren't saved for Widget steps (multi-step widgets).
Goals
On the widget page, the Goals card sets which Goals the widget is credited with.
Option | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
Goals | The goals tracked for this widget, such as Purchase or a Page view goal on your thank-you page | None |
Primary goal | The starred goal (Make primary). It drives the totals on the Widgets list and the default goal in reports | None. Without a primary goal, totals include every tracked goal |
Attribute on view | "Will attribute the above goals if the widget was just viewed, without the need for a conversion to happen inside it." | Off |
Goal attribution
When a visitor reaches a goal, a widget that tracks that goal is credited if, within the attribution window before the goal hit, the visitor:
Widget setting | Credited when the visitor… |
|---|---|
Attribute on view off | Converted in the widget (a Track widget conversion ran), or was in the control group of a Widget A/B testing |
Attribute on view on | Saw the widget, or was assigned to its control group |
Two kinds of purchase credit don't need the widget to track any goal (Shopify and Wix):
- Coupon codes. If the order uses a code the widget applied to the cart, or that the visitor copied from the widget, the widget is credited. See Coupon and discount codes.
- Product click-throughs. If the visitor clicked a product in the widget's Products element and then bought that product, the widget is credited.
Credit isn't split: every qualifying widget and campaign gets the full goal hit and its value. See Revenue attribution.
Choosing between conversion and view attribution
- Off (conversion-based) answers "how much did people who acted on the widget buy?". It's strict, but it misses influence, such as a visitor who read a free-shipping bar and bought without clicking.
- On (view-based) answers "how much did people who saw the widget buy?". It captures influence, but credits the widget for purchases that would have happened anyway. Pair it with a control group to measure the real lift.
Widget metrics
Metric | Meaning |
|---|---|
Views | Times the widget was shown (control group excluded) |
Clicks | Clicks on buttons, linked images and products. Buttons whose only action is closing the widget, and buttons that only spin a wheel, aren't counted |
Submits | Form and survey submissions |
Contacts | Visitors who became contacts through this widget. See Contacts and form submissions |
Conversion rate | Conversions ÷ views |
Completion rate | Completions ÷ views |
Goal CVR | Visitors with goal hits ÷ reach (unique visitors who saw the widget) |
Revenue | Value of goal hits credited to the widget |
Additional revenue | Value of products added to the cart from the widget and then bought (Shopify and Wix) |
Behavior details and limitations
- Conversions count events, not visitors. A visitor who submits a form twice counts as two conversions; conversion rate is per view, not per visitor. Goal CVR is per visitor.
- Totals use the primary goal. When a primary goal is set, the Widgets list totals count only that goal. In the report, choose another goal to see it.
- Changing goals isn't retroactive. Goal hits already credited keep their credit; changes apply to new goal hits.
- Previews never record anything. Use a private window on your live site to test conversions end to end.
Examples
- Email popup: Track widget conversion on the form (added automatically), Frequency: Stop once converted, goal Purchase with Attribute on view off. You measure sign-up rate and the revenue from people who signed up.
- Free-shipping bar: no conversion element, so turn Attribute on view on and track Purchase, with a control group to measure the lift.
- Spin to win: Track widget conversion only on prize segments, so "no luck" spins don't count, and goal Purchase. The coupon code also credits orders directly.
