Email list and tag filters
Email list and tag filters match visitors by their status in your email marketing platform: whether they're subscribed to a list, have a tag, or signed up through a form. Use them to hide signup popups from existing subscribers, show list-specific offers, or personalize your site for a segment you already manage in your email tool.
Available on: all platforms. Requires: the matching integration connected in Integrations. Each filter appears in the filter menu once its integration is connected.

How it's evaluated
You pick one or more lists, tags or forms from your connected account.
Option | Matches when |
|---|---|
is subscribed / has / is in | The visitor is in at least one of the selected lists, tags or forms |
is not subscribed / does not have | The visitor is in none of them. Visitors Personizely doesn't know yet also match |
not in (Ometria) | The visitor is a known Ometria contact who is in none of the selected lists |
These filters take a moment to resolve at the start of a page view. Content that depends on them stays hidden until they have.
Where the data comes from
All platforms except Ometria. When you connect the integration, Personizely creates webhooks in your email platform so it receives subscribe, unsubscribe, tag and profile-update notifications. You don't need to set them up yourself. Each notification is matched to a visitor by email address and updates that visitor's lists, tags or forms in Personizely. This means:
- The visitor must be known by email. Personizely only records memberships for visitors whose email it already has, for example from a Personizely form, ply.identifyVisitor, a tracked email link or a Shopify login. See Identifying visitors.
- Changes are recorded from the time you connect. Existing memberships aren't imported. A contact who joined a list before you connected the integration is recognized after their next subscription, tag or profile change in that platform.
- Signups through Personizely are covered. When a Personizely form adds a visitor to a list, the platform reports the subscription back, and the filter starts matching for that visitor shortly afterwards.
Ometria. Membership is checked with Ometria each time the filter is evaluated, so it's always current. The visitor must be linked to an Ometria contact: they arrived through an Ometria email link, or Personizely sent them to Ometria from a form.
Setup
- Go to Integrations and connect your email platform.
- Open a target, click Add filter and choose the platform's list, tag or form filter.
- Choose the status (for example subscribed) and select one or more lists, tags or forms.
- Use the target in a campaign or in a widget's Target rule.
Behavior details
- Anonymous visitors count as "not subscribed". A first-time visitor matches is not subscribed and does not have. This is usually what you want for signup popups.
- Ometria "not in" needs a known contact. A visitor Personizely can't link to Ometria matches neither in nor not in. To target everyone outside a list, put "Ometria List: in [list]" in a group set to don't match.
- Device changes. Memberships are stored with the visitor. A subscriber on a new device is recognized once they're identified on it, for example by clicking a tracked link in your emails.
- Unsubscribes. An unsubscribe notification removes the visitor from that list. In ConvertKit (Kit), an unsubscribe removes them from all forms.
- Disconnecting. If you disconnect the integration, its filters stop being updated.
Examples
- Don't show the newsletter popup to subscribers: Target rule "Show to" a target with "Mailchimp List: Visitor is not subscribed to Newsletter".
- Customer-only content: "Active Campaign Tag: Visitor has the following tags: customer" for a personalization that replaces the homepage's first-order discount with a loyalty message.
- Lapsed-subscriber win-back: "Ometria List: Visitor is in Lapsed 90 days" for a bar with a come-back offer.
