Locale filter
The Locale filter matches visitors by the language their browser is set to, such as English (United Kingdom) or German (Germany). Use it to greet visitors in their language or to show language-specific offers, independently of where they are.
Available on: all platforms.
How it's evaluated
The filter reads the visitor's preferred browser language: the first language in their browser or device language settings. The visitor matches when that language matches one of the regional locales you select, such as German (Germany) or German (Austria). Each locale is matched as listed: German (Germany) matches a browser set to de-DE, not one set to de-AT.
Only the first preferred language counts. A visitor whose browser lists English (United States) first and German (Germany) second matches English (United States) only.
Options
The filter reads: Visitor's browser language is one of locales.
Option | What it does | Values / default |

Behavior details
- Language, not location. A visitor in Spain with a browser set to English (United Kingdom) matches English (United Kingdom), not Spanish (Spain). To target by country, use the Location filter.
- Not your store's language. The filter ignores which language version of your site the visitor is on. On Shopify, use the Market filter or the page path (for example /fr/) for that.
- Same for every page. The browser language rarely changes, so the result is the same across pages and visits unless the visitor changes their settings.
- To target all speakers of a language, select each of its regional locales you want to reach, for example English (United States), English (United Kingdom), English (Canada), English (Australia) and English (India).
Examples
- Localized welcome: Locale is one of French (France), French (Belgium), French (Switzerland) and French (Canada), with a French version of your welcome popup, and the English version shown to visitors who don't match.
- Regional offer: Locale is one of French (Canada), with a bar announcing free shipping to Quebec, while visitors with other French browsers see your standard bar.
