Widget history filter
The Widget history filter matches visitors by how they've interacted with your widgets: how many times they've viewed, clicked or submitted a widget, either a specific one or any widget. Use it to stop asking subscribers to subscribe, to follow up on a popup someone clicked, or to show a second offer after the first one was seen.
Available on: all platforms.
How it's evaluated
Personizely counts the visitor's widget interactions of the chosen type, optionally for one widget and within a date window or the current visit, and compares the count with your number.
- Interactions on the current page count right away. A widget submitted or clicked on this page is included the next time the filter is checked, for example when another widget's trigger fires.
- Visitor history loads first. Filters that need visitor history may take a moment to resolve; content that depends on them stays hidden until they do. With During this session, the filter resolves right away.
Options
The filter reads: Viewed / Clicked / Submitted a widget at least / less than N times, with two optional settings you turn on with their checkboxes.
Option | What it does | Values / default |
|---|---|---|
Viewed / Clicked / Submitted | Which interaction to count | Viewed |
at least / less than | "At least N" includes N; "less than N" excludes it | at least |
N | The number of interactions to compare with | Default 1 |
The widget (optional) | Count only this widget | Off: every widget counts |
Date window (optional) | Count only interactions in the window | Off |
In the last N days | From the start of the day N days ago until now | Default 3 days |
On or after / Before | On the selected date or later / before it | Date |
During this session | Only interactions in the visitor's current visit | |
What counts as each interaction
Interaction | Counted when |
|---|---|
Viewed | The visitor actually saw the widget. Each time counts once; control-group impressions in a widget A/B test aren't counted |
Clicked | The visitor clicks a button or linked image in the widget. Buttons with no action or a close action, and wheel spins, don't count as clicks |
Submitted | The visitor submits a form in the widget |
Behavior details
- Counted per visitor, across widgets. Without The widget, interactions with all your widgets add up: viewing three different popups once each counts as 3 views.
- Previews don't count. Interactions while previewing a widget aren't recorded.
- New visitors have no interactions, so "at least" doesn't match them and "less than" does.
- Per browser. History is tied to the visitor's browser profile; clearing cookies or switching device starts again at 0.
- For "don't show this widget again" logic, the widget's own Frequency rule is usually simpler. Use Widget history when one widget should react to another, or when you need a date window.
Examples
- Don't ask subscribers again: a group set to don't match with Submitted a widget at least 1 time, The widget = your newsletter popup, used in the Target rule of every signup widget.
- Second-chance offer: two Widget history filters in a group set to all: Viewed your first-order popup at least 2 times In the last 7 days, and Submitted it less than 1 time. Use it to show a stronger discount.
- Follow-up after a click: Clicked your "Shop the sale" bar at least 1 time During this session, with a callout on the cart page reminding them the sale ends tonight.
