Device filter
The Device filter matches visitors by the type of device they browse on, such as Mobile, Tablet or Desktop. Use it to run a mobile-only popup, test a layout change on desktop only, or keep a widget off smart TVs and game consoles.
Available on: all platforms.
How it's evaluated
The device type comes from what the visitor's browser reports about itself, checked on every page. It doesn't depend on the screen or window size. The visitor matches when their device type is one of the types you select.
Options
The filter reads: Visitor's device is one of device types.
Device type | Matches |
|---|---|
Desktop | Desktop and laptop computers, and any device that doesn't identify as one of the other types |
Mobile | Phones |
Tablet | Tablets, including Android tablets and Kindle devices |
Console | Game consoles, such as PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo |
Smart TV | Smart TVs and TV streaming devices |
Wearable | Watches and headsets, including VR headsets |
Embedded | Browsers built into other devices, such as car screens |
Select at least one type.
Behavior details
- There's no separate laptop type. Laptops are Desktop.
- iPads usually count as Desktop. Safari on iPad identifies itself as a Mac by default, so most iPads match Desktop (and the Mac OS), not Tablet. Only iPads set to request mobile websites match Tablet. A Tablet-only audience therefore misses most iPads; test on a real iPad before relying on it.
- Phones in "desktop site" mode identify as desktop computers and match Desktop.
- Unknown devices are Desktop. A browser that doesn't identify its device type is treated as Desktop.
- Targeting vs layout. Device targeting uses the device type, while the widget builder's mobile layout uses the screen width (up to 480 px). A tablet matches Tablet here and gets the desktop layout if its screen is wider than 480 px. See Widgets on mobile.
- Reports can be broken down by device too. See Breakdowns.
Examples
- Mobile-only popup: Device is one of Mobile, used in a widget's Target rule, with a scroll-based exit trigger.
- Desktop experiment: a content campaign targeted at Device is one of Desktop, testing a wider product gallery.
- Phones and tablets: Device is one of Mobile and Tablet.
