Teaser (minimized widget)
A teaser is a small tab or box that stands in for a widget while it's closed. Visitors click it to open the widget. It can appear before the widget's trigger fires, as an invitation ("Get 10% off"), and after the visitor closes the widget, as a minimized version they can come back to. Teasers are available for popups and callouts.
Available on: popups and callouts, on all platforms. Bars and embedded widgets don't have a teaser.
How it works
Turn the teaser on with the switch next to Teaser at the top of the builder's Steps panel. Its Behaviour settings control when it appears:
Before trigger
- On page load, once the widget's Widget display rules pass, the teaser waits for its own Delay (Time) or Scroll depth.
- Then it appears, if the widget's audience rules (Target, Query string, Widget interaction) still pass at that moment.
- If the widget's trigger fires first, or the visitor clicks the teaser, the widget opens and the teaser disappears.
On close (minimize)
- When the visitor closes the widget without converting, it minimizes to the teaser instead of disappearing.
- The widget stays minimized in the visitor's browser, across pages and sessions, until they click the teaser.
- While minimized, the teaser appears immediately on every page where the widget's rules pass, and the widget's triggers don't run. The widget only opens when the visitor clicks the teaser.
- Clicking the teaser opens the widget and ends the minimized state. Closing it again minimizes it again.
If the visitor converts in the widget (a Track widget conversion automation runs), closing it doesn't minimize; it closes normally.
Configuration
Settings
Option | What it does | Values / default |
|---|---|---|
Type | Box: a small panel that can hold text, headline, image and container elements. Tab: a single line of text on a tab at a corner | Box (default), Tab |
Position | Where the teaser sits | Box: 8 positions (corners and edge centers). Tab: the 4 corners |
Animation | How the teaser appears | Slides matching the position (for example Slide left and Slide up for bottom right), Slide (tab only), Fade |
Duration | Animation length | 0.1–2 s |
Behaviour
Option | What it does | Values / default |
|---|---|---|
Before trigger | Show the teaser before the widget's trigger fires | On |
Trigger | What reveals the teaser before the trigger | Time, Scroll |
Delay | Seconds after page load (Time) | 0–30 s, default 3 |
Scroll | Scroll depth (Scroll) | 1–100%, default 10% |
On close | Minimize the widget to the teaser when the visitor closes it without converting | On |
At least one of Before trigger and On close must stay on; the switch for one is locked while the other is off.
Style
Background, border, border radius, shadow and size. Box teasers also have spacing. Edit the teaser's content by selecting it on the canvas, like a step.
Behavior details and limitations
- A minimized teaser persists until it's clicked. It has no close button of its own, so visitors who never click it see it on every page where the widget's rules pass. To limit this, add a Frequency rule rule such as Pause for 7 days after minimize or Pause for 1 hour after minimize. While the rule pauses the widget, the teaser is hidden too.
- Minimized widgets skip their triggers. An exit-intent popup that's minimized won't open on exit; it waits for a teaser click.
- Clicking the teaser re-checks the audience. The Target, Query string and Widget interaction rules are checked at the click. If they no longer pass, for example because another popup is open, the teaser disappears and the widget doesn't open.
- The teaser counts as "minimized" for frequency, not "closed". A Stop once closed rule doesn't stop a widget that minimizes on close. Use "minimized" in the rule, or turn On close off.
- Converting prevents minimizing. Once a visitor submits a form or clicks a button with Track widget conversion, closing the widget closes it for good (subject to your frequency rule).
- Step is kept while minimized. Reopening from the teaser shows the step the visitor was on. See Widget steps (multi-step widgets).
- Teasers appear above page content, like the widget itself.
Examples
- Discount tab: a callout with a coupon, triggered by exit intent, with a Tab teaser "10% OFF" in the bottom left, Before trigger after 5 seconds and On close on. Visitors who aren't leaving can still open the offer.
- Spin-to-win reminder: a popup with a wheel of fortune. Before trigger off, On close on, plus Pause for 7 days after minimize, so visitors who close the wheel keep a reminder for a week at most.
- Survey invitation: a box teaser "Got 30 seconds?" on the right edge after 50% scroll. The survey popup has no trigger of its own, so it only opens from the teaser.
Troubleshooting
- The teaser shows on every page and never goes away → it's minimized and nobody clicked it. Add a frequency rule on "minimized", or clear the site data in your own browser to reset it while testing.
- The widget no longer opens on its trigger → it's minimized in this browser. Click the teaser or test in a private window.
- The teaser never shows before the trigger → the trigger fires before the teaser's delay or scroll depth, or the audience rules don't pass when the teaser is due.
