Visit history filter
The Visit history filter matches visitors by how many times they've visited your site, such as "visited at least 3 times" or "visited less than 2 times in the last 30 days". Use it to treat loyal, frequent visitors differently from occasional ones.
Available on: all platforms. Plan: Premium.
How it's evaluated
Personizely counts the visitor's visits, optionally only those in a date window, and compares the count with your number.
- A visit (session) starts when the visitor opens your site with no other tab of it open, and lasts until they close every tab of your site. There's no inactivity timeout. See Visitor identity, sessions and storage.
- The current visit counts from its second page. On the first page of a visit, only earlier visits are counted. From the second page on, the current visit is included.
- Visitor history loads first. Filters that need visitor history may take a moment to resolve; content that depends on them stays hidden until they do.
Options
The filter reads: Visited at least / less than N times [date window].
Option | What it does | Values / default |
|---|---|---|
at least / less than | "At least N" includes N; "less than N" excludes it | at least |
N | The number of visits to compare with | Default 1 |
Date window (optional) | Count only visits that started in the window | Off |
In the last N days | Visits from the start of the day N days ago until now | Default 3 days |
On or after | Visits on the selected date or later | Date |
Before | Visits before the selected date | Date |
Behavior details
- Worked example. A visitor on the first page of their third visit has 2 counted visits. "Visited at least 3 times" matches them from the second page of that visit.
- New visitors have 0 visits, so "at least" never matches them and "less than" always does.
- Returning visitors from their first page. Because the current visit isn't counted on its first page, "visited at least 1 time" matches a returning visitor on the first page of their return. It also matches a new visitor from the second page of their first visit. For a strict "returning visitor" audience, use First visit is now in a group set to don't match.
- Per browser. Visits are counted for the visitor's browser profile. A visitor who clears cookies or switches device starts again at 0.
- No "this session" option. A visit is always the whole session, so the filter has no During this session window. To count pages within the current visit, use Page view history.
